🪩 you're like a disco ball 🪩

Hello! It’s Lea again,

I hope you had a great week. If you don’t know me, it's nice to meet you! This is Sunday Spreads, my weekly personal illustration challenge. This week wanted to chase the feeling I had after going to a great exhibition on Disco ! If you’re passing by Paris, I fully recommend this, it’s in the Philharmonie museum, which often does musical exhibits.

They actually recreated the vibe of a Disco dance club, a lot of people were dancing and there was many iconic instruments, costumes and pictures on display. ( Dance! John Travolta, Dance! )

And of course a loooOOoot of Disco balls:

All this sparkly goodness inspired me to make this drawing, exploring all the beautiful sparkly flaws and faces that humans have. You can read a bit more on the process below:

To be fully honest with you I didn’t have much time this week, my full time job has me locked in an office for 40 hours a week and the weather has been so nice that I just want to stay outside the whole weekend ! So little drawing it is. I thought it would be easy and smooth sailing, but no no no, it was a whole rollercoaster ride.

So I started with this sketch done in Procreate:

I wanted the whole head to be like a disco ball and little rainbow reflections.

And I thought okay! Nice, I can now print a more refined sketch with a more clear disco ball layout on the face and paint it traditionally using pastels:

And then I hated the traditional results… I don’t know why I didn’t actually keep my digital sketch next to me as reference, and the colors turned out a bit muddy and dark. Also laying out rainbow colors on blue doesn’t match the sparkly white, grey and blue associated with a Discoball.

I still scanned it out of the faith that I could fix it digitally…And finally I was able to layer the traditional drawing on the digital sketch in procreate and using a blending more to get the textures without the messed up colors. You can see the whole process here:

( the song is one of my favorite disco song: Give me the night by George Benson)

And finally here is the final result:

Anyways, let me know what you think, and don’t hesitate to reach out. I am always looking to connect with fellow artists & illustrators to share the joys and sorrows of creating pretty pictures from our heads.

Lea

P.S.: Thank you, Mum, for gifting me the Disco vinyl from the exhibit Gift shop!
